What?

A Rift is a passage that appears briefly in places where the Aetheric Field of Aion is weakened. Each end of the fissure is connected to Elysea and Asmodae rescpectively.

Where?

It is at a hard-to-find location.

Come again?

Aion Rift is the port (represented as a colorful swirling vortex) between Elyos and Asmodians, the Rift randomly appears in the maps(>Level 20). Through the Rift, Elyos or Asmodians can enter in the land of oppoisite faction, its the only way to pvp except Abyss, of course you can only use it to collect materials, do quests or go to common instances.

Each rift has a limit to the number of times it can be used (aka: how big the group coming in our out can be), and will vanish after the time expire or the max number of character has entered through the rift.

Important to know:

Time Limit: A rift will only stay open for 26 minutes realtime (which is 2 hours gametime).

Number of Players Limit: After the given number of players have entered, the portal will close. (You can enter and exit rifts and it will only count as one player usage. So one player cannot “use up” a rift player limit on his/her own)

Level Limit: Each riftlocation (! not the rift itself) has a level limit which prevents high lvl players from entering.

Undirectional: If you enter a rift in one direction, and leave through the same rift, you might not end up in the place you started. However rift exits are located in hard to reach places, so you might not be able to get to it after exiting a rift.

Attack Speed does not affect your spell casting speed at all,in any way. It only improves the physical attack speed.

So why am I asking you as a caster to read this? Well Attack Speed also have the quality that it reduces the time the cast animation take to finish!

So? Well this means; even some of your instant casts have an animation that take time to complete. You cannot start to cast a spell (or do any action except moving) before the animation of the previous one is done. So even if your cast time is instant, the casting animation might not be.

You should therefore:
1. Learn and plan when/how to use your spell casts wisely, with the shortest animation first if no other advantages/disadvantages come from that choice of sequencing the spells.
2. Simply know of this fact and take it into consideration when getting a new gearset. If two items are alike, this can be a decisive factor in your choice.

Using the Attack Speed boost well, will allow you to fit the maximum number of casts into the timeslots you have. This also goes for non caster classes, and their abilities of course.

Magic Casting Time

Basic Idea

This stat reduces the cast speed of all of your spells except for your CC (crowd control spells like Curse of Roots, Sleep, and Sleep Storm).

If you see Casting Time Boost+20 on an item, that is a 20% reduction in the cast speed of your spells. Casting Boost+50 would be a 50% reduction. So on, and so forth. This reduction stacks multiplicatively with other bonuses (i.e. from Stigmas or Chanter buffs).

Cast Time bonuses come from the following sources:

Gear: Currently (as of patch 1.5.0.5), only books and orbs (usually higher level ones) have casting time boost as a stat. The highest is +20 (top-end) and the lowest (from low level blues) is +11. These are all more than +30 lvl requirement items.

Stigmas: There are currently two Stigmas that offer cast time reduction. Vaizel’s Wisdom gives -25% cast time for 15 seconds, with a cooldown of 30 seconds. Boon of Quickness (Asmodian only) gives -50% cast time for 15 seconds, with a cooldown of 5 minutes. These two abilities cannot be used simultaneously.

Buffs: Currently only one buff gives cast time reduction. Word of Quickness (from Chanters) gives -50% cast time for 30 seconds, with a cooldown of 10 minutes.

Thus, the maximum cast speed reduction one can achieve currently is -80% as an Asmodian (Boon of Quickness, Word of Quickness, and +20 Casting Time Boost from your weapon), and -70% as an Elyos (Vaizel’s Wisdom, Word of Quickness, +20 Casting Time Boost from your weapon).

Stacking

Casting Time Boost bonuses stack in a multiplicative manner, not additively. What this means is that if you had 50% cast time reduction from one source, and 50% from another source, it would not result in -100% cast speed (i.e. making your spells instant cast).

It would instead operate in this manner (let’s take a 2 second cast spell as a an example):

2 * 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.5 second cast

The 2 second cast would be reduced to a 0.5 second cast, which is an overall cast speed reduction of 75%. This give the second buff half the value of the first (if they are the same buff level).

Another example: Let’s say you have a buff giving -25% cast time, a book that gives you Casting Time Boost+20, and the Chanter buff that gives -50% cast time.

So you have three separate cast time reductions: 25%, 20%, and 50%.

Let’s say you’re trying to cast Inferno (normally a 4 second cast):

4 * 0.75 * 0.80 * 0.5 = 1.2 second cast.

Thus your total cast time reduction is -70% off the original cast time.

Magic Attack

The Magic Attack boost increases the damage you do with your spellbook or orb.

This is utter rubbish. It does not increase you spell damage, casting time or ability to hit. Avoid this enhancement and try finding better ones like Magical Accuracy, HP, Magic Boost, concentration or even MP.

The idea behind Power Shards is added damage. A poor monster’s soul has been trapped inside a stone, and depending on the fiercy creature within, some extra damage is added to each physical attack, ranged attack or spellbook/orb attack. No spells are affected by Power Shards.

You have 2 slots that Power Shards can be equipped into. If you equip shards in both slots the damage bonus will stack, but you will be burning 2 Power Shards with every blow. If you are Dual Wielding, it will apply one shard to each weapon.

Casters

Casters (Mages) can equip shards in both slots, but only the off-hand slot will be used. This adds damage to your Spellbook or Orb attack. Other skills and actions will not consume shards, nor gain a damage bonus. In other words; they are utterly useless for mages (and nothing much to care about for anyone else either for that matter) unless you are playing them very strangely with alot of spellbook/orb attacks.

Magic Resist

Base principle

The pair Magical Resist / Magical Accuracy works in the same manner as the pair Block / Accuracy. Said differently, for each 10 points Magical Resist is superior to Magical Accuracy of the attacker, you gain 1% of probability that the spell will fail/fizzle.

Example: Player A has 500 M.Res and his enemy has 345 M.Acc -> (500 -345) / 10 = 15,5 -> Player A “blocks” spells of his enemy with a 15,5% probability.

Differences for specific spells

The tests the group has done in CBT6 mostly utilize the spell Flame Bolt I, an example for a simple spell that only does damage. In consequence, information concerning this spell are precise and the spell works exactly according to the base principle given above. Evidently it’s also the case for all other spells of this kind, thus a big number of them.

It’s says that other tests have been done in order to measure the precision of the spells Restraint, Sleep, Curse: Tree and Ice Chain (effect of freeze only), but they take an insane amount of time to do, because of the long cool-downs. Less could be done, hence our results are imprecise.

What seems certain, is that their success-rate varies in the same way as for simple spells like Flame Bolt. Said differently, if M.Acc of the attacker increases by 100, then the success-rate also increases by 10% for both cases.

What seems less certain, is the existence or non-existence of a malus/penalty for CC. According to their results, Curse: Tree fizzles 10% more frequently than Flame Bolt. The freeze effect of Ice Chain presumably also. The problem is that we have a lack of measurements on this subject. Therefore it is possibly only a false impression, or the malus could employed in places, where we would not expect them. In brief, the last word is not spoken on CC.

Relevance of level

On top of things said before, level has it’s role to play. One can say that it gives a defense bonus to the target, or an accuracy malus/penalty to the attack – never mind. For what is to follow, let’s just say it is a bonus for the defender. Values found:

These values translate into an increase of fail-rate by 10%, 20%, 30% etc. of the attacker.

You can see that it has no values for a level difference larger than 10. However, it is certain, that one can’t have a bonus larger than 1000.

The reasoning comes from a test done in last beta: a player of level 1 (very rarely) hits a level 25 player, if the latter has a Magical Resist of 0. This can only be possible for the case effective resistance doesn’t exceed 1000 (taking into account that the attackers M.Accuracy is barely over 0).

All this to say that by logic, one should get a bonus of 900 for 11 levels of difference, later 990 or 1000 (thus 99% or 100%) for even larger differences.
