What?

A Rift is a passage that appears briefly in places where the Aetheric Field of Aion is weakened. Each end of the fissure is connected to Elysea and Asmodae rescpectively.

Where?

It is at a hard-to-find location.

Come again?

Aion Rift is the port (represented as a colorful swirling vortex) between Elyos and Asmodians, the Rift randomly appears in the maps(>Level 20). Through the Rift, Elyos or Asmodians can enter in the land of oppoisite faction, its the only way to pvp except Abyss, of course you can only use it to collect materials, do quests or go to common instances.

Each rift has a limit to the number of times it can be used (aka: how big the group coming in our out can be), and will vanish after the time expire or the max number of character has entered through the rift.

Important to know:

Time Limit: A rift will only stay open for 26 minutes realtime (which is 2 hours gametime).

Number of Players Limit: After the given number of players have entered, the portal will close. (You can enter and exit rifts and it will only count as one player usage. So one player cannot “use up” a rift player limit on his/her own)

Level Limit: Each riftlocation (! not the rift itself) has a level limit which prevents high lvl players from entering.

Undirectional: If you enter a rift in one direction, and leave through the same rift, you might not end up in the place you started. However rift exits are located in hard to reach places, so you might not be able to get to it after exiting a rift.
